COVID-19 Pandemic has disrupted education across the globe and affected plans of students planning to study abroad.
Countries continue to remain in lockdown making it impossible to plan an appointment for a student visa. The extent of consequences is not yet clear as we continue to see developments and changes in plans on a weekly basis by the educational institutes.
For the spring and summer semesters, colleges have gone online and have cancelled all “in person” classes, lectures and student activities. Exams and thesis defence may be postponed or held in different formats. Admissions for the Autumn/Fall semester is taking longer as Admissions Committee members work remotely. Many students are unable to meet eligibility criteria and have an incomplete application.
France
Since March 17, the country has been under a restrictive lockdown and universities have been closed. No details available as yet regarding university application deadlines for the autumn semester.
Germany
Since March 16, Germany has been under a partial and then a tighter lockdown. Universities in Germany have postponed Summer semester start to May, depending on state. No in-person classes to be held until then. Winter semester may be delayed to 1 Nov 2020. Since high school exams are delayed, admissions to Bachelors degrees will be delayed.
Italy
Since March 17, The country is under a restrictive lockdown and universities have been closed. No details available as yet regarding university application deadlines for the autumn semester.
Ireland
Has suspended in person teaching for this semester. Colleges/universities are devising independent policies for enrollment and application for Autumn 2020.
The Netherlands
Has reduced face-to-face teaching and resorted to online solutions as much as possible. University application deadlines for the autumn semester are likely to be delayed.
Spain
In a state of emergency and lockdown since March 14. All Universities in Spain are currently closed.
Switzerland
Has suspended in person teaching until third week April.
United Kingdom
Has suspended in person teaching until third week April. Institutions/colleges/universities have independent policies for enrolment and application for Autumn 2020. The UK Council for International Student Affairs has compiled its guidance for international students. Read more in ukcisa.org.uk. Visas have been extended for students unable to return to home countries on account of the lockdown
United States of America
All classes for Spring Semester have been moved online, and commencement ceremonies postponed. All “in-person summer activities” are being cancelled. Universities are beginning to consider the possibility that in-person classes may not resume until 2021. Classes will continue to be held remotely through the fall semester.
